Most extrusion guides online talk about UV resistance in general terms. This article uses actual Lahore and Karachi climate numbers, because the material that survives outdoors in Islamabad’s winter will not necessarily survive Karachi’s summer.

Why Pakistan’s Heat Is a Harder Test Than Most Material Guides Assume

Lahore’s average high temperature in June is 40.4 degrees Celsius, and it stays above 27 degrees even at night. That is not a rare heatwave, it is the average.

UV degradation in plastics accelerates once ambient temperature passes roughly 40 degrees Celsius. Lahore sits at or above that line for the entire June to August stretch.

Karachi runs slightly cooler on average, around 33 to 35 degrees at peak, but its UV index hits 12, the maximum rating, from April through August. Karachi also adds coastal humidity and salt air into the mix.

Put together, an outdoor profile in either city is under sustained heat and near maximum UV exposure for close to five months of the year. Material choice is not cosmetic here, it decides whether the part lasts one season or ten years.

What Heat and UV Actually Do to Plastic

Sunlight breaks the polymer’s molecular chains through a process called photo-oxidation. This is invisible at first, then shows up as yellowing, surface chalking, and eventually cracking.

Heat speeds this process up, since higher temperatures give the broken molecular chains more energy to react further. That is why the same PVC profile fails faster in Lahore than it would in a cooler climate.

The fix is not a different base material alone, it is a UV stabilizer added during compounding. Without one, most standard plastics fail outdoors within 1 to 3 years regardless of which polymer you picked.

PVC, HDPE, and PP Compared for Pakistan’s Climate

Rigid PVC, UV stabilized. Handles Pakistan’s mix of sun, heat, dust, and pollution well. This is why it remains the standard choice for window profiles, door seals, and construction trim across the country.

HDPE, UV stabilized. Resists moisture, salt air, and chemical exposure better than PVC, which makes it the stronger pick for Karachi’s coastal humidity or any part near water or industrial washdown.

Polypropylene, PP. Has the highest melting point of the three, around 160 to 170 degrees Celsius, so it handles hot equipment and engine bay applications well. Left unstabilized, PP is the fastest of the three to embrittle outdoors, often within 2 to 3 years.

The pattern to remember: heat resistance and UV resistance are two different properties. A material can survive high processing or service temperature and still fail outdoors if it lacks UV protection.

What “UV Stabilized” Actually Means

A UV stabilizer is a chemical additive mixed into the plastic before extrusion, not a coating applied afterward. The most common type, HALS, works by neutralising the broken molecular fragments before they can chain-react and spread damage.

This is added at the compounding stage, in the exact percentage the application needs. Too little and the part still fails early, too much adds cost without extra benefit.
