How to Choose the Right Plastic

Answer these 5 questions about your application and you will know which plastic to use.

What temperature will the part be exposed to?

Temperature is the most important factor. Here is a simple guide:

Does the part need to be flexible or rigid?

  • Very flexible (rubber-like): TPE or flexible PVC
  • Semi-flexible (can bend but holds shape): PP, HDPE, LDPE
  • Rigid (stiff, does not bend): ABS, PC, Nylon, rigid PVC, POM

Will the part contact food, water, or be used in medical applications?

  • Food safe: PP, HDPE, food-grade PET, some grades of PC and Nylon
  • Not food safe: standard PVC (contains additives), ABS, POM
  • Drinking water: food-grade HDPE, food-grade PP

Always specify food-grade when requesting a quote for food-contact applications.
